At the Foot of the Cross

The cleansing blood of Christ
Flowing from His body
The ground drinks it in
At the foot of the cross

Cheers and jeers
The “King” is dying
People gathered to see His end
At the foot of the cross

Rolling for treasure
His garment up for grabs
The soldiers casting lots
At the foot of the cross

Confusion and despair
His followers look on
Watching their Lord die
At the foot of the cross

I fall to my knees
Desperate and broken
I have come to the end of myself
At the foot of the cross

Weighed down by sin
Desiring to be free
I left it all
At the foot of the cross

Composition Date: October 19th, 2009

Holli’s Notes:
My husband and I have been doing a time of meditation and listening to God at night before bed. For several nights I had a very vivid image of crosses pass in and out of my mind as I sat quietly before the Lord. The final time it was very clearly me at the base of the cross, kneeling and broken. Thus began this poem.
